Moving to OpenBSD

Jan 12, 2026

Hello!

Until now, this website has been running on Github Pages. As a student, I get a few things free of charge, Pages being one of them.

Unfortunately, Github sucks, both as a platform and a company. I would prefer my code to not be eaten by AI constantly. So I've used this as an opportunity to learn more about OpenBSD!

I decided to host with OpenBSD Amsterdam (https://openbsd.amsterdam/). It's inexpensive and gives back to the project.

My blog runs on Zola, which has a good native OpenBSD support (edit: maybe...), so the transfer process was pretty smooth.

The Next Day

My post "OpenBSD on the Sharp Zaurus SL-C3100" was put on OsNews! Which is both good and bad, because...

I'm in the middle of moving my site! While setting up analytics with httpd (very easy) and GoAccess, I saw that my RSS feed was getting 404s.

Oops.

I think there's some kind of bug in Zola that causes RSS feeds to not be generated on OpenBSD. Both on my server and laptop (running OpenBSD 7.8 and -current), zola build and zola serve don't create a feed. On Fedora Linux, it does. I'll submit a bug report or contact a developer soon. Right now, I'm generating the atom.xml file on Linux and copying it to my server. Not ideal.

Other than that, it seems to be going well enough!

You can still subscribe using https://goldfishdev.net/posts/atom.xml which I've uploaded manually.

Expect more old laptop and PDA stuff soon, I've got some things in the mail ;)

Until next time,

goldfish
